Victoria Summer Music Festival celebrates the Lafayette String Quartet’s 30th Anniversary!
Our Festival audiences have been delighted by their regular appearances, and it should come as no surprise that their concerts always sell out.
The members of the Lafayette Quartet are also celebrating their 25th year as Artists-in-Residence at the University of Victoria’s School of Music. These dynamic women have inspired audiences and performed to critical acclaim throughout North America and Europe. The Lafayette is the only all-female ensemble in the world to comprise the four original members after twenty-eight years—a distinct rarity, regardless of gender and regardless of profession.
Early in the Quartet’s career, they garnered major competition prizes, including the Portsmouth International String Quartet Competition and the Grand Prize at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition
The Lafayette Quartet enjoys performing music from all eras. They commission new Canadian works, notably R. Murray Shafer’s 11th String Quartet, and their recordings have received universal critical acclaim.
The Lafayette Quartet annually offers advanced string quartet study in Victoria at their “Quartet Fest West” program, and will again collaborate with Victoria Summer Music Festival’s community engagement project.
